Hunting
Fall and Winter provide a wide variety of small and large game for state-licensed hunters. Longleaf Plantation in Prospect offers a 3,000 acre retreat. Here at Longleaf, Quail hunting seminars are available and the Plantation is open to the public. DeSoto National Forest is open to the public. Numerous local hunting clubs as well as private citizens hunt on generation owned private land.

Intercollegiate Athletics
The University of Southern Mississippi is a member of Conference USA participating in NCAA Division I-A athletics. The Golden Eagles Field Teams in 16 intercollegiate sports. Several outstanding professional athletes have worn the black and gold of the Golden Eagles. Brett Favre, Ray Guy, Sammy Winder, Clarence Weatherspoon, Louis Lipps, Michael Jackson and Reggie Collier are just few who have gotten their start at Southern Mississippi.
Jones County Junior College and Pearl River Community College provide athletic competition at the Junior College level. William Carey College participates in athletic competition as well.

Area Parks
Paul B. Johnson State Park
Paul B. Johnson State Park, located within 10 miles of Lamar/Hattiesburg area, is a very popular recreation destination- expanding over 800 acres of pine forest. Paul B. Johnson lake is stocked and spans across 300 acres. The lake is lined with cabins and provides an inviting atmosphere for boating, fishing, and swimming.
Little Black Creek Water Park
Little Black Creek Water Park is also a popular destination site for many South Mississippians. Little Black Creek 600 acre lake is stocked and the park is open to boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, camping, and cabins are available for rent. There are developed camping spurs as well as primitive camping sites.
Turkey Creek Water Park
Located just off Highway 15, five miles southwest of Decatur, Mississippi. Turkey Creek Water Park 250 acre great deep-water fishing lake is open to boating, skiing, swimming, picnicking, fishing, hiking, camping & cabins are available for renting. There are developed camping spurs.
Big Creek Water Park
Located between Laurel and Collins on Highway 84. Big Creek Water Park 150 acre lake is great year-round fishing. Camping, fishing, swimming, picnicking, hiking and boating. Developed camping spurs.

Hattiesburg Zoo at Kamper Park
Discover the best small zoo in the South, located in "America's Best Small City." The zoo is small enough to visit without tiring and large enough for a fulfilling experience. Be sure to see the tiger exhibit, lemur exhibit, prairie dog town, and ride the Kamper Park and Southern Railroad, a miniature train that operates on a half-mile track through the zoo. Nested in a grove of oak and pine trees, this 21 acre zoological garden is dedicated to conservation, scientific study, education and visitor enjoyment.
