| When it comes to higher learning, Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt make the grade! Hattiesburg is home to the University of Southern Mississippi, the second largest university in the state. It is also home to William Carey College, the second largest private college in the state. There are two junior colleges in the Pine Belt area. |

The University of Southern Mississippi, located in Hattiesburg, is a comprehensive educational institution enrolling nearly 12,000 students. The University of Southern Mississippi offers study in 89 Undergraduate Curricula, 79 Master's Degree options and 19 Doctoral Programs. Included are superior Architectural, Computer, Construction, Electrical, Industrial and Mechanical engineering programs. Also included is the Nationally acclaimed Polymer Science and Polymer Institute polymer research program. It is through the progressive nature of the leadership of the University, the pro-business applications of its programs and the extensive resource base offered, that area industry enjoys its solid relationship1.

William Carey College, also located in Hattiesburg is South Mississippi's only private, fully accredited, four year liberal arts college is the second largest private college in the state. Carey has more than forty clubs and organizations which provide avenues for students to pursue interests in specialized areas. Students can select from an extensive list of majors and can study in an academic climate which allows opportunity for close interaction with faculty in and out of the classroom. Carey provides many cultural events which are open to the public2. |
| Jones County Junior College, conveniently located 10 miles from Laurel and 20 miles from Hattiesburg, has an enrollment of around 4,600 students for the current school year. Jones County Junior College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of Southern Association of College and Schools to award Associate of Arts degrees, Associate in Applied Science degrees and Vocational Certificates. In addition, the Associate Degree Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing; the Academic Business Division is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs; and the EMT/Paramedic Program is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education Accreditation3. |

Pearl River Community College provides custom designed technical and vocational training for the Pine Belt area, including new employee training and skill upgrading training for ongoing employment. Pearl River Community College, with campuses in both Hattiesburg and nearby Poplarville, offers academic and technical education. In cooperation with a local industry's specific needs, Pearl River can offer technical training, such as CNC and CAD/CAM technician training specifically designed to the company's specifications. Ongoing technical programs include microcomputer specialist, electronic technician, allied health profession, drafting and design, instrumentation, machine shop, welding and many more. An excellent program for customized industrial and technical training through Pearl River Community College is Mississippi Industrial Start-up training1. |
